Ellmer are very proud to congratulate Rachael Smith, Design Manager, on graduating from a three-year part-time Master of Architecture degree (RIBA Part 2) at the University of Greenwich.
Rachael completed a thesis titled ‘A Monument to the Ocean’, which is a project proposing an offshore plastic decomposition facility in response to the estimate that there are 80,000 metric tonnes of plastic in the Pacific Ocean alone. The design was based on scientific quantitative research to enable farming and provide housing for five microorganisms that can metabolise different types of plastic. At the end of the building’s life, the ferrocement type structure would be flooded and it will become ‘A Monument to the Ocean’.
An amazingly thought out, relevant, design. Well done Rachael!
