The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, not for profit, non-government organisation that provides standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organisations interested in responsible forestry. It's mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests.

The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is also an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
